Job Status:  Full-Time (30 hours per week), 10-months

Salary Range:  $33,600 - $38,400 Commensurate with certification and experience

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Provide interpreting and/or transliterating services in the K-12 classroom setting between classroom teachers
and D/deaf students throughout San Diego County. Strong possibility the majority of work assigned will be in North County schools.

Additionally, may be assigned to provide interpreting services to the Deaf community, DCS staff and clients.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform interpreting services as needed throughout various situations and locations with clients of
    various ages. Emphasis is on educational interpreting.
  2. Interpret for staff member meetings, presentations, appointments, and other situations as necessary.
  3. Perform occasional interpreting services for Deaf counselors and non-signing DCS clients in the office as assigned.
  4. Work flexible hours, evenings and weekends when feasible.
  5. Willingness to drive to all areas of San Diego County, particularly North County and South Bay; reliable transportation is a must.
  6. Represent the agency in a professional manner.
  7. Adhere to agency policies and rules as well as department requirements.
  8. Attend DCS staff meetings and staff development activities as required.
  9. Complete required paperwork in a timely manner and maintain accurate records.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  1. Assist in fundraising activities and participate on event committees as time permits.
  2. Provide support to interns enrolled in the DCS internship program by:
    • Assisting interns in improving skills through observation and feedback; modeling appropriate interpretation of specific materials.
    • Team with interns and provide assistance and feedback as necessary.
    • Discuss issues of concern regarding proper behavior and ethics in the work environment.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to interpret or transliterate accurately and effectively between D/deaf students and hearing consumers.
  • Knowledge of language acquisition issues and D/deaf children, child development, educational
    systems, and a variety of signing modalities used in the K-12 setting.
  • Ability to follow DCS regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Ability to maintain contact with the DCS Interpreting Department and other DCS team members by
    cell phone or similar device.
  • Ability to remain professional at all times, e.g., stay in the interpreting role, ascertain and maintain professional lines and boundaries, maintain professional interpersonal communication skills with
    all campus staff and students, meet schedules and timelines and maintain records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EIPA 4.0 or above, current RID or NAD certification.
ITP graduate and/or one year of paid or voluntary experience working in a classroom with D/deaf students
or equivalent preferred.
Must have a valid California driver’s license, current automobile insurance, and private transportation.
