GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision of the Director of Literacy. Is responsible for the instruction of deaf adult literacy classes as well as the development and implementation of the curriculum. Implementation of the student’s individual rehabilitation plan (IRP) with student and his/her rehabilitation counselor for the deaf (RCD); preparation of appropriate learning units to facilitate student achievement of his/her IRP goals, and ongoing consumer evaluation and monthly progress reports.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
a) Perform responsibilities for the instruction of pre-literacy, beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes.
b) Develop and implement the program curriculum and lesson plans to facilitate student’s achievement of his/her IRP goals; implement each individual IRP with the student and his/her RCD.
c) Collaborate and develop IRP with students; monitor for feedback to modify IRP; provide guidance to students.
e) Instruct and accommodate students with diverse needs by developing and /or adapting them appropriately depending on individual learning styles and levels.
f) Prepare short and long term goals and lesson plans for each student using appropriate techniques and materials the classroom.
g) Prepare and maintain ongoing student evaluations, monthly progress reports, required documentation and administrative reports; evaluate students progress and performance in attaining goals.
h) Create an environment conductive for adult learning; maintain a secure classroom environment.
i) Recruit, coordinate, direct and supervise classroom volunteers; coordinate instruction schedule, substitutes and volunteers.
j) Display a high level of effort and commitment to perform work; operate effectively within the organizational structure; demonstrate trustworthiness, professional and responsible behavior.
k) Develop and maintain positive working relationships with supervisor, DCS departments, students and community partners.
l) Plan and coordinate periodic field trips of interest including contacting and arranging for field trip sites, transportation, confirming site visits, overseeing participation, following up, and evaluating.
m) Assist with planning and coordinating presentations for trainees.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
a) Promote the CLSTP to public and private organizations through networking and outreach activities.
b) Attend monthly DCS staff and department meetings.
c) Participate in staff development and team conferences.
d) Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Director of Literacy.
e) Maintain First Aid and CPR certification
Education:
Bachelor Degree in Deaf Studies, English or equivalent. Classroom instructional experience will be considered in lien of B.A. degree in these disciplines.
Master’s degrees in Deaf Education/Rehabilitation for the Deaf preferred.
Experience/Knowledge:
One to two years experience in an education setting with Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing.
Skills:
Some knowledge of lesson planning, development of support materials and techniques. Fluency in American Sign Language and minimal language skills are required. Experience working with computers, software, and the Internet. Ability to handle multiple tasks. Flexibility and strong organizational skills. Ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel and the general public, in a professional manner. Ability to work well in a team-oriented, diverse, environment is required.
