POSITION: Client Support Specialist
DEPARTMENT: Behavioral Health Department
ACCOUNTABILITY: Clinical Director of Behavioral Health Department
CLASSIFICATION: Salary, Non-Exempt
SALARY: $35,360 -$40,500 (Annual)

The Client Support Specialist is accountable to the Clinical Director of the Behavioral Health Department for the provision of a wide variety of individualized case management and advocacy support for consumers. The Client Support Specialist works to develop service plans and strategies to provide consumers with the resources and services they need as well as works to strategically educate the Community and public about resources available to them and the needs of the deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind and late deafened communities in San Diego.


  • Assesses consumer needs and develops a service plan and strategy to help them achieve their goals and obtain the services and resources they need
  • Provides direct case management and advocacy services to consumers
  • Maintains knowledge of and the ability to explain necessary resources and independent living service processes such as social security, HUD etc.
  • Assists clients in navigating a variety of government, medical and other online systems
  • Completes data entry and maintenance of required charts, reports and outcome measures
  • Keeps thorough, confidential and up-to-date client records to ensure effective and efficient client services
  • Works with Clinical Director to establish outcome goals
  • Attends various health and resource fairs to provide information regarding DCS and services available to the community when directed
  • Coordinates and provides workshops on a variety of topics related to improving the mental, physical, and/or social health of members of the deaf and hard of hearing community
  • Coordinates and provides training to family members, teachers, professionals and other sources of support on a variety of topics related to deafness and Deaf Culture
  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy standards for client protected health information and other information and materials in accordance with agency policies and applicable regulations and laws including HIPAA
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field, preferred


  • Minimum of two years’ experience providing case management, client services or similar services
  • Minimum of two years working at a social services agency in the field of client management or equivalent field
  • Thorough familiarity with American Deaf Culture and knowledge about Deaf and Hard of Hearing people
  • An understanding of current issues related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people
  • Knowledge of San Diego resources and public transportation


  • Fluency in American Sign
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people using a wide variety of communicative styles
  • Excellent written English
  • Develop rapport and trust showing compassion while listening to find appropriate solutions
  • Handle stressful situations and works well under pressure
  • Work well in a team-oriented, culturally diverse environment
  • Flexibility and strong organizational skills
  • Manage time well, prioritize and multi-task
  • Understand and carry out verbal/written directions
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Effective communication skills, including presentation skills

Other Qualifications

  • Possesses excellent computer skills utilizing word processing, email, calendar, spreadsheet, PowerPoint and database applications
  • Must possess reliable transportation and be able to attend off-site activities regularly
  • Must be able to pass required background clearance (DOJ clearance)
