Sign languages have existed most likely as long as spoken languages, but will they survive into the future? In the age of the implant and the genome, what purpose can sign languages serve in the new century? This talk looks at sign languages around the world and what they tell us about the present and the future.

Directions to the Institute of the Americas:
Please note the Institute of the Americas is
located on the campus of the University of
California, San Diego (UCSD). The mailing address is 10111 North Torrey Pines Road, but the Institute of the Americas is actually on another street and is not visible from North Torrey Pines Road.
From Interstate 5 Freeway:
1. Exit La Jolla Village Drive. Turn West
(LEFT if heading North, RIGHT if heading South)
2. La Jolla Village Drive curves towards the right and becomes North Torrey Pines Road.
3. Turn Right at Pangea Drive , entering the UCSD campus.
4. Turn Left at stop sign onto North Scholars Drive and another immediate Left onto roof level of parking structure.
If Pangea Parking Structure is full, the back up parking lots are to the north of the Pangea Parking Structure on each side of Scholars Dr. and bordered by North Point Dr. on the north.
