Who Pays for Sign Language Interpreting
Sign Language Interpreting services are provided on a fee-for-service basis. DCS does not have the funding to provide free sign language interpreting services. Our rates are competitive. Further information can be obtained from our sign language interpreting scheduler at scheduler@dcsofsd.org
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that equal access be provided to persons with disabilities by all public entities (for example, government offices, courts, public schools, etc.) and by all services which are provided to the public at large (for example, doctor's offices, medical clinics, hospitals, lawyers, etc.). Generally, this means that such entities are required to pay for sign language interpreting services. However, there are exceptions, because the ADA law also provides that services such as sign language interpreting are not required if providing them would constitute an undue financial burden on the agency or organization. If you are having difficulty in obtaining needed sign language interpreting services, please contact our office and ask for an appointment with one of peer counselors/advocates. We are often able to help resolve these situations.
