YFS: ASL 1 & 2 Classes Instructor

POSITION: Instructor – ASL 1 & 2 Classes
DEPARTMENT: Youth and Family Services
STATUS: Contract
SCHEDULE: $25-$30 per hour based on experience

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Instructor is responsible for the instruction of weekly ASL level 1 and/or 2 classes, as well as, the development and implementation of lesson plans for ASL students.
 
Additionally, instructor is responsible for the preparation of appropriate weekly lessons to facilitate students’ achievement of learning American Sign Language and introduction to Deaf Culture concepts.
 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Instruction of American Sign Language lessons
  • Prepare curriculum and weekly lessons to facilitate students
  • Instruct and accommodate students with diverse needs by developing and/or adapting lesson plans appropriately for various learning styles and levels
  • Motivate students to improve their ASL skills and communication skills through individual and group sessions
  • Create a professional class environment conductive for adult learning
  • Work with the Youth and Family Services Coordinator to create and facilitate an end of course evaluation which helps DCS evaluate its ASL program

 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Deaf Education or Deaf Studies preferred
 
Experience: One year or equivalent of experience teaching ASL and experience working with Hearing Families
 
Skills: Knowledge of lesson planning, development of support materials and techniques used to improve students communication with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community. Fluency in American Sign Language and Visual-Gestural Communication skills
